  West Maui Sustainability Meeting

Introductions

New faces were introduced: Ananda Stone and Ua Bradshaw. Welcome to the group.

 

Website

Sanna and Ua agreed to work with Pi from Upcountry to develop our web site. It was suggested that we use Joomla to create a website/database combination. This set up would make it easy to make changes and updates. Ananda volunteered to supply photos. Sanna has already set up a WMS page on Facebook.

 

Mission Statement

All are encouraged to review the mission statements of South Maui Sustainability and Upcountry Sustainability, and bring their own version to the next meeting, where we will discuss the options.

 

Education for Next Meeting

Steve will present on cooperatives and local economy based on the PROUT model. Check out www.prout.org.

  • Energy (local renewable energy): (we know you’re out there)
  • Water: Sanna, Ua, Tamara
  • Recycling: Eve, Ananda, Tamara, Jennifer
  • Public Relations: Sanna, Ua
  • Cooperatives: Steve, Gorden
  • Hawaiian Sovereignty: Ua, Tamara

Lahaina WMS

A new branch of West Maui Sustainability will begin on May 10, 6:30 pm at the MCC campus in Lahaina. They plan to meet the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, while the Napili branch will meet the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6:30 pm. Contact Kathy Corcoran at [email protected] for more information on the Lahaina branch and Steve Phillips for the Napili branch at [email protected].

 

Action Items

  1. Website development: Sanna and Ua will talk with Pi and get the ball rolling.
  2. MCC Garden in Lahaina: Kathy Corcoran is in discussion with MCC to create a garden on Campus. More to come as this idea develops.
  3. Lahaina Intermediate School Recycling: Ananda will work with this school to begin a recycling program and provide recycle bins.
  4. Stencil Drains with “All Drains Lead to the Sea”: Ananda will get youth to help with this project.
  5. All check www.Pasifika.com: They have informational video programs focused on the pacific islands. Suggested by Tamara.
  6. Taro Field Trip: Ua will check into leading an educational field trip to Kahakuloa to Uncle Oliver Dukelow’s Taro (Loi) fields. He will let us know when.
  7. Hana Group: Steve will call people who have expressed interest in starting a sustainability group in the Hana area.
 

Island Wide Sustainability Event

All are encouraged to attend “Maui Growing Local”, May 15, 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the Kihei Charter School in Kihei. Go to www.southmauisustainability.com for directions and more information about the event. This promises to be a key event for Maui people to work together to move toward sustainability, primarily in the area of sustainable agriculture with a focus on meeting local needs. Carpooling encouraged.

 

Earthday Expo at Westin

Sanna and Tamara staffed a booth at this Earthday event and arranged for people to plant seeds in little pots created from newspaper. These seeds grew and were planted at the preschool in Kapalua, near Flemming Beach. Great job Folks.
