Committee Reports

Tamara reported for the Food Committee on composting

  • Researched green waste composting systems on the Big Island
  • Transfer stations only in Hilo and Kailua Kona
  • Free drop off
  • All goes through a chipper
  • Anyone can drop off and pick up
  • No composting done on site
  • Website Idea: Match those who have grass clippings and wood chips and those who need them.
  • More home composting
  • Need company to donate 2 acres to create a west Maui drop off site for green waste.
  • Maui Earth Compost: $9 for drop off. Creates compost and sells.
  • WeFarm will soon start a drop off and composting site on their farm.

Tamara reported for the Water Committee on water testing

  • Water test Kits available
  • Need to conduct 1,000 turbidity tests to confirm water problems to the EPA and Maui County.
  • The water has too many suspended solids containing bacteria. Measures need to be taken to prevent this.
  • Contact Tamara for test kits. Samples can be dropped off at the Maui Surf Shop.
  • Robin Knox and Terry Leonard of SMS are also working on this issue.

Eve and Ananda reported for the Recycling Committee

  • Need two acres in West Maui for a recycling drop off. Nearest one now is near Olowalu.
  • Need to clean up current sites.
  • From research done, it would be best to have curbside pick up of recyclables, but this is not expected to happen in the near future.
  • The county voted to buy an incinerator but does not have the funds currently. This would create a problem with toxic ash.

Clothing Recycling

  • Ananda is organizing a clothing collection for Women Helping Women. Contact her for more information.

Tree Project by Rotary Club

Carmen, new President of the Rotary Club, presented her ideas for planting more trees in West Maui. There are many advantages in having more trees on Maui. Prevent runoff, increase oxygen, provide fruit, provide shade and bring more rain are few good reasons. The Rotary has some funds to start a planting project. Ua from WMS will work with Carmen to plant Koa and other tree varieties.

Mission/Vision

All were still in favor of the statements we developed at the previous meeting.

Mission Statement: To create a conscious community that lives sustainably and promotes shared awareness, education and cooperation within West Maui.

Vision: We are a self-reliant West Maui Community working in harmony with the environment.
