Meeting Minutes, June 21, 2010

Review of last meeting (Tamara)

Minutes approved.

Tree Planting

Sanna will get in touch with Megan Webster, the makai stewardship coordinator for Maui Land and Pine.  They already have a native planting project in existence, so we'll see how we can contribute, and possibly involve the Rotary Club who wants to start a tree planting project.

WMS Website

The website is up and running! www.westmauisustainability.weekly.com
Check it out! If you have any photos, links, videos, articles events that you would like posted you can email them to sanna ([email protected]) and she will put them upon the site.

School Garden

We are In the process of planning a school garden for Princess Nahi'ena'ena elementary school.  The school year begins August 6th, and we are hoping to have the raised beds in before then.  James, Amy and Sanna will be coordinating the project, if anyone is interested in being involved or knows of materials that could be donated to the project please email [email protected].

Non-Profit Umbrella

Tamara is looking into the legalities of the Save Honolua Coalition possibly umbrella-ing West Maui Sustainability so that it would be easier for us to accept donations and apply for grants.

PR and Education

Eve has volunteered to do 5 minutes of free PR for our group before each public meeting at the civic center.  This is a great opportunity for us to let the community know what we have been and    have planned to do.  We also discussed educational ideas and possible classes/workshops that we would like to hold on the west side.  Tamara would really like to see a joy ofwormscomposting class on the west side! Dr. Chung, a soil tester, was also mentioned.  We also discussed possible meeting spots to hold these workshops.  The Kapalua Nature Center was mentioned as a possibility.

New Hospital
There is in new hospital for west Maui in the works.  Eve is going to look into possibly helping out with planning some sort of garden that would benefit the patients and the public!
